Beetle with unusual antennae - Macrosiagon

Beetle with unusual antennae - Macrosiagon
Gainesville, Alachua County, Florida, USA
July 30, 2006
Size: ~12 mm
This was sitting on an elderberry (Sambucus) in my back yard for about an hour this morning. It was so reluctant to move (it let me handle the leaf, measure it), I wondered if it was sick, but a couple of hours later when I checked again, it had moved on.

I tried to narrow it down to a family by the antennae, and thought perhaps it's a glowworm beetle, but I couldn't find one to match.

Rhipiphoridae
This is a very nice find, it is a Rhipiphorid beetle genus Macrosiagon. Especially the males have the nice antennae, the females often have just normal straight antenna.

Thanks, Martin!
