Checkerspot? -
Chlosyne gorgone
Irvington, Douglas County, Nebraska, USA
July 27, 2012
Size: About 25mm
I found several of these caterpillars feeding on separate sunflower leaves on a single plant. Can anyone help with ID?

Close relative
I wouldn't be surprized to see either species feeding on
Echinacea
, but
C. gorgone
is the one that has orange-striped caterpillars, and it is quite common in much of Nebraska. It is more often on Sunflower or Marsh Elder though.

Maybe?
Chlosyne gorgone
, the host plant is right for that. The other one I was thinking of was
Chlosyne fulvia
but the host plant is wrong and they're a little farther west.

That was my thought as well.
I have never seen an adult Gorgone, but I know we have them around here.
