Syrphus ribesii (Linnaeus 1758)

Size

8.1-13.3 mm(1)

Identification

Wing bm cell entirely covered with tiny hairs (i.e. trichose)

Eyes bare

Black bands of abdomen complete to edge; margin not narrowly yellow

Male hind femur either yellow or black on basal 2/3

Female mid and hind femora only black right at base, with most specimens having a hind femur that is completely yellow

Range

holarctic, throughout NA (Alaska & Canada to CA & MS to Central America)(1)

Food

Larvae recorded feeding on a variety of aphids, including Macrosiphum, Aphis, Pemphigus, and Cinara(1)

Remarks

Most variable Nearctic Syrphus species(1)
