If I identified these incorrectly,
they will be California Crescents - Phyciodes orseis, which are very similar, and are likely also found in that area.

technically - if you get picky about it - these aren't either
However, "Crescents" are basically just a subgroup of Checkerspots. To confuse matters, the English-speaking Europeans don't use the name call "Checkerspots", and call them all "Fritillaries", including the "real" Fritillaries [even though Checkerspots and Fritillaries aren't very closely related].
