Giant Swallowtail larva - Papilio cresphontes

Giant Swallowtail larva - Papilio cresphontes
Lakeland, Polk County, Florida, USA
July 25, 2012
This was the giant swallowtail caterpillar that I saved from the citrus tree a few weeks ago. I put fresh citrus leaves in water container everyday in its habitat. It has been slow growing but finally after several weeks it is now a chrysalis. I have also noticed that unlike my Gulf Fritillaries, Monarchs, Black Swallowtails and Polydamas swallowtails that I only found one caterpillar on the citrus tree as compared to dozens of caterpillars of the other species on their respective host plants.
