Reddish-brown Stag Beetle--detail of antenna - Lucanus capreolus

Reddish-brown Stag Beetle--detail of antenna - Lucanus capreolus
Durham County, North Carolina, USA
August 1, 2006
This beetle was found under a light, disarticulated, with all its soft parts gone (eaten by ants?). It was perfect for some macros of structures. This is the ventral surface of the right antenna. The outer leg of the antenna shown here is about 5 mm long. I'll use this as a thumbnail illustrating the geniculate antennae for the family Lucanidae.
