Longhorn Beetle Crashes Badminton Party - Stenelytrana emarginata
Upshur County, West Virginia, USA
August 6, 2004
In the midst of a badminton party, this uninvited guest showed up. He was very large. Everyone had to stop playing and check him out. When last seen he was climbing all over the head of a cement gnome. Any help with ID appreciated.

The more I look at my photo and my copy of Yanega, I am wondering if this could be Leptura emarginata? Yanega says it is large, which it was, but he also says scarlet and black. Yet his photo looks more like the colors in my photo....

Leptura emarginata
You got it! Have to tell this story. In a forested park in Cincinnati I noticed these guys circling dead standing beech trees, about 20-30 feet overhead. I actually purchased an extendable net specifically to catch one. Naturally, after hours of craning my neck, one of them flew low enough and slow enough for my lumbering butt to catch up to it...with my regular-length net. Now I need a chiropractor:-)

Great Story...
Great story! An interesting species. It sounds like they attract attention wherever they go.
