Hydrophilus? - Hydrophilus triangularis

Hydrophilus? - Hydrophilus triangularis
Soquel, Santa Cruz County, California, USA
August 7, 2012
Size: About 30mm
Encountered lying motionless on the dirt about 50 feet from a creek. I put him in a cardboard box to photograph, and it sprung back to life, scurrying around in the box. when finished with the pictures, I took it down to the creek and threw it in the water. It seemed to swim with sort of a running motion.

I can't imagine this heavy an insect flying...but I guess it must.
