Yellow Locust - Schistocerca americana - male

Yellow Locust - Schistocerca americana - Male
The Woodlands, Montgomery County, Texas, USA
August 5, 2006
Size: ~2.5" head to wing tiips
These are plentiful in the grass near the little wetland behind our house. They fly quite well (could this be why the hind leg is thin compared with other hoppers?) Any information, or help with ID would be appreciated. Thanks!

American Bird Grasshopper
Schistocerca americana

This one is a female, the males are more brown in color.

Thanks for the ID
This is a really fascinating bug. Moving to the guide to represent Texas.
