Difference in biting female & non-biting male mouthparts
Note the somewhat bulky mouthparts of this female...which house large, sharp and parallel mandibles that are used to quickly "slash" a small incision in the host's skin, before the fly laps up the blood that flows therefrom. Overall, the female's mouthparts seem more round & bulky than the male's (which don't "bite")...compare with the full-size image in the post below:
