Hornless hornworm - Eumorpha achemon

Hornless hornworm - Eumorpha achemon
Las Vegas, Clark County, Nevada, USA
August 15, 2012
Size: approx. 2.5 to 3 inches
I found this worm on my Thompson Grapevine. I've been carefully plucking large green 'tomato hornworms' off my tomato plants every morning for a few weeks & ended up wandering over this morning to my arbor to look at the grapes....VOILA! There is this massive specimen!

here
is the moth..they seldom become pests.. and the photo doesnt do them justice

Moved from ID Request.

Nice find. This Eumorpha achemon larva adds Nevada to the guide for this species. According to Tuttle's Hawk Moths of North America, this species is only found in extreme southeastern Nevada (Clark Co.), your record is a good western US example of achemon's distribution.

I unlinked your images and I will frass the other top-down image as only this one is needed in the guide. I saved your remark from
the frassed image and added it to this image.

Fast ID!
Thanks Ryan!
