Size: ~17 mm
A richly colored male found in the field behind our house. I am hoping the cerci are clear enough in this shot to garner a species ID...Eric?

yes, definitely that's what it is
It's a very colorful one. I like these bright orangey ones, but I like the blue ones even better.

Redlegged Grasshopper?
This looks like a bright, perky little Redlegged hopper
(Melanoplus femurrubrum)
to me. The Pfadt's sheet for this species has good ID info and mentions that the overall bulbous look of the male's genital area is diagnostic--here's their closeup of it:
Experts: Any similar species with like features to consider? I like the Pfadt's sheets, but they do mainly only cover grasshopper species of concern to agricultural interests...I'm sure there must be many others one could be looking at...
