Little digger - Bicyrtes

Little digger - Bicyrtes
Riley Wilderness Park, Coto De Caza, Orange County, California, USA
August 7, 2006
I think I saw many of these, but only this one landed after hovering/darting a few inches off the ground. Soon as it alit, the digging in loose sand began. After a few seconds, wasp flew off, hovered again, then sat down in about the same place and dug some more.

Moved
Moved from Bembicinae. Really does look good for Bicyrtes, and am leaving the image here for now. Were they hunting stink bugs?

Don't think so, Eric.
Haven't seen any stink bugs there, but who knows. Thanks for the upgrade and the move. Saw one of these neat little guys just the other day, but I was a little too slow to photograph.

Moved
Moved from Bembix.

Bembicine sand wasp.
This is a bembicine sand wasp, though I'm not even sure which genus it belongs in! Might even be a Bicyrtes sp. Nice images.

Thanks, Eric
Usually, I do much better when I shoot an insect for the second time. Maybe this is the infamous buck fever? In this instance, the second time came minutes later. (First photos were just awful!)
