unknown butterfly - Speyeria cybele - Female
Bracebridge, Muskoka, Ontario, Canada
August 23, 2012
Size: maybe 5 to 6 cm
Does anybody know this butterfly? In the book Butterflies by the Audubon Society I couldn't find any matching picture, some of the Fritillaries come close, but none of them had all these white spots. Thanks for any help!

wasn't sure where Bracebridge is,
and though this looked rather like subspecies krautwurmi. However, that [ill-defined] subspecies is found in upper Michigan and into adjacent Ontario quite some distance further to the northwest. Even so, I think that a lot of the insects from around the upper Great Lakes tend to look similar to that subspecies.

Moved from ID Request.

Thank you
Thanks so much for the identification help, Bracebridge is about 200km north of Toronto, roughly between Georgian Bay and Algonquin Park, on the 45 degree latitude.

It is a female Great Spangled Fritillary
Speyeria cybele. Might be a subspecies other than the "typical" one though; I'll check into it.

Looks like Atlantis to me...
In your area, it has to be Atlantis, Aphrodite, or Cybele (great-spangled). Usually the solid black border on the forewing indicates Atlantis. the light colored spots along the edge of the forewing are a variable trait in a lot of different fritillary species. Some tend to have the lighter spots more often than others, but it's something that can show up to a certain degree in a lot of our fritillaries, at least in parts of their range.

thanks for the help in the id
