how often?

If I find a certain insect for e.g. April 15th, and another in another location October 18th, do I submit both photos?

Or once I have a species recorded, is only 1 photo per species allowed?

Or do I edit the one I have to somehow comment on where else I've found this and what date?

Technically I could have a cabbage butterfly photo every day for the whole season it's around,

yet on the other hand, how would I get the info in that I sighted a butterfly at an unusual time of the season when I already have a photo of it?

Thanks.

You can post both photos
In my area, there's no unusual time of year for cabbage butterflies. They're always around, if less common in winter. For species that are more seasonal, an out-of-season sighting, relative to the location, is informative enough to warrant posting. The map you get to from the Data tab for a particular taxon provides guidance by showing how many photos BugGuide has for each month of the year in each state or province.

"Or do I edit the one I have to somehow comment on where else I've found this and what date?" No, you don't have to do anything like that.

Sorry, I tried to be more specific in the General Forum, as I still have questions, after your answer...

Part of orig question: "If I find a certain insect for e.g. April 15th, and another in another location October 18th, do I submit both photos?"
I took the answer to mean: if it is an out-of-season sighting: post it.
So conversely I take it, if it's in season then don't post it.
However: if mourning cloaks are frequent in May, occasional in June, July, and frequent in August, rare in October... do I post June and July postings or not? June and July are not out of season, but neither are they are fequent as spring and summer. The majority of any insect I post, it's the first time Saskatchewan gets on the data map, so there isn't a lot of SK data to start with.

Therefore: if I find a species where my one post shows Sask for just that month, and no other months show that species, yet they are anywhere from frequent to occasional from April to Nov, I take it I should post a photo every month that there is no SK on the data map?

"Or do I edit the one I have to somehow comment on where else I've found this and what date?" No, you don't have to do anything like that. Thanks, now I know that's not the route to show what months the species is in Sk.

Summary: Hoping I've understood it all: what I'm left with is thinking:

If I have a species, whether or not it is out-of-season or not: check the data map first. If the data map does not show Saskatchewan: I should add the photo. Is that most correct?

Thanks.

No absolute answers
There are a lot of "ifs" here. A new photo may be worthwhile even if BugGuide already has one or more from Sask. If your photo is better than what you find using the data map, by all means post it. "Better" includes such things as being clearer/sharper or showing a behavior like mating or predation or grooming. The thing to avoid is overloading a section that has many photos of one kind of creature from the same region. Most species that are in BugGuide at all are shown in multiple photos for a state or province. There's no rule against that.
