Caterpillar - Lapara coniferarum

Caterpillar - Lapara coniferarum
Bessemer, Jefferson County, Alabama, USA
August 26, 2012
Size: 1.5 – 1.75 in
The thing about the caterpillars I've encountered is that unless they're eating, they're walking. This makes getting a photo difficult. Ah well.

Moved from Sphinx Moths.

Orange true legs generally distinguish Lapara coniferarum from the similar L. bombycoides, a more northerly species which would most likely be out of its range in Jefferson Co. Also, L. phaeobrachycerous is a possibility in AL. But, according to Tuttle, the single L. phaeobrachycerous larva that he examined had orange centers within the black spiracles, while L. coniferarum has solid black spiracles, like this individual.
