This is sort of an aside, but I couldn't resist after the description of the pattern given.
A younger synonym for this grasshopper is
Hippiscus "rugosus"
, [for the "rugose" top of the pronotum]. This name isn't used anymore, but it lead directly to the common name "Wrinkled Grasshopper". That name seems silly to me. However, the name "
ocelote
" is in reference to the leopard-spot (or ocelot) pattern, and the name "Leopard Grasshopper" or "Ocelot Grasshopper" would seem much more fitting.
Maybe I'll start a campaign
