Coos County, Oregon, USA
August 8, 2006
Size: approx an inch and a half
Mixed conifer riparian area. The area was thinned last year and there is a lot of slash on the ground. It was travelling down a user made road though.
This pix is blurry but shows size.

Unique!
This is a very unique cockroach species called the "brown hooded roach," in the genus Cryptocercus. They are native, and dwell in small colonies in rotting logs. They are common in the Pacific states, and also found in the Smoky Mountains. It is unclear if there is more than one species. They are placed in the family Cryptoceridae or Polyphagidae, depending on which expert you consult:-) Like termites, they have "gut fauna," microbes in their digestive tract that help digest the cellulose in the wood. Females give birth to 'live' young.

Thanks!
I have never thought about roaches being out in the woods. Have always pictured them in houses. Interesting!

You're welcome.
I'm moving this out of 'frass' and into the guide because the state record is indicative of the disjunct distribution of this insect, something else very unusual. When better images come from the west coast, these will go back in 'frass.' Thank you, though, for the contribution.
