I think this is a species complex with other, undescribed species involved in the west, but this is the best placement for now. Getting the exact species of
Populus
may be useful.

"Quaking aspen"
USFS says quaking aspen (
http://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/htnf/recarea?recid=66132
) or dwarf aspen (
http://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/htnf/recreation/camping-cabins/recarea?recid=65736&actid=29
), with dwarf possibly a descriptive term rather than a species. The aspen trees were small.

Quaking Aspen (
Populus tremuloides
); "dwarf" is indeed just a decriptive term for short specimens (in this case induced by the subalpine environment).
