Spiny Rose Galls - Diplolepis bicolor

Spiny Rose Galls - Diplolepis bicolor
Fort Hancock, Monmouth County, New Jersey, USA
May 13, 2010
Size: 10 mm
Spiny Rose Galls (Diplolepis bicolor wasp) with wild rose host - Sandy Hook National Seashore, New Jersey

These aren't usually this red, but in this case the Cynipid wasp laid it's eggs on the red stem of a Wild Dune Rose (most likely Rosa Rogusa),
thus giving the galls the deeper red color of the stem.
