Size: 3.5"
I'm almost sure this is a Carolina wolf spider although it looks much lighter than most of the pictures I've seen here.

Actually I'm pretty sure it's Heteropoda venatoria. Compare with

Heteropoda venatoria in NC
yes, it appears to be a bit out of range. I will see if I can find a reference to this species in NC.
