large black fly with bluish wings - Hermetia illucens
Springfield, Virginia, USA
September 10, 2004
A large fly, perhaps a soldier fly? Its wings had a noticeable bluish sheen in natural light (not quite visible when flash is used) and the legs had white segments. It was found flying around some recent grass clippings. Any help in identifying is appreciated.

Soldier fly
Yep, you got it, the black soldier fly, Hermetia illucens.

Thanks, Eric!
