Dave Kavanaugh is "pretty sure this is Leistus ferruginosus...
"It's really the only possibility in that area."

thanks to Moritz Schröer who's pointed out this blunder of mine
he added, "It reminds me of Leistus larvae and it might be something related but I really can't tell. <...> I'm not familiar with North American beetles."
