Tussock Moth Caterpillar - Lophocampa maculata

Tussock Moth Caterpillar - Lophocampa maculata
Cedar River at Landsburg Reach, King County, Washington, USA
September 3, 2012
Size: 2 cm
If it wasn't for the orange tuft, and the fact it was found in Washington State, I would be inclined to think this was a Hickory Tussock Moth. However, I do know we have Spotted Tussock Moths (Lophocampa maculata), even though this does not have the typical yellow bands with black ends. This tussock moth caterpillar, looks similar, but the colors of the tussocks are reversed. Perhaps this is an early instar of Lophocampa maculata?

Moved
Moved from Butterflies and Moths. It is very unusually colored. We'll move it to L. maculata and maybe we can get some insight from ken strothkamp.
