Large wasp-like insect with even larger cicada - Sphecius speciosus

Large wasp-like insect with even larger cicada - Sphecius speciosus
Plant City, Hillsborough County, Florida, USA
August 11, 2006
Size: 60 mm aproximately
I have been noticing tuhnnels in the ground around my house and the large insect pictured was usually in the vicinity. These tunnels are almost perfectly round and 25-30 mm in diameter and I have no idea how deep. This evening I witnessed this large wasp like insect land with this even larger cicada in tow. It landed several feet from the tunnel and was able to quickly locate it and move the cicada to the entrance and disapear down the tunnel into the ground. The image shows the insect in question on top of the much larger cicada while moving it to the tunnel. The cicada apears to be paralyzed or dead.
