Wasp-mimic Beetle - Platydracus maculosus

Wasp-mimic Beetle - Platydracus maculosus
Living Water Farmer's Market, Gainesville, Prince William County, Virginia, USA
September 9, 2012
Size: 1"
Upon exiting a farmer's market, I beheld this large insect on the ground and initially thought it a wasp, but bent down anyway to check it out and then noticed the short pair of elytra. It moved like a wasp, though, flicking its black wings, but didn't seem to be making much headway as far as getting anywhere, so I ran back into the store and asked the proprietor if she had a container I could have, then collected it to bring it home for photos, as I didn't have the right gear with me and it was something I hadn't seen before.

I was hoping to get video of its wasp-like movements, but it's not moving quite that way anymore, and the wing to the left appears to be kind of stuck out too far - maybe that's why. It's still alive but kind of curled. I didn't know what to give it to keep it alive, so it has a drop of water and a dandelion flower head for company.

The front pair of legs is shorter than the others, and the foot pads are wider.

Oh yes -
it was even doing that same scorpion thing as well - cool! I didn't know rove beetles got this big, though the short elytra made me think of them.

Thank you!
