ants - Veromessor andrei - female

ants - Veromessor andrei - Female
Santa Rosa Plateau Preserve, Riverside County, California, USA
March 28, 2012
I'm not so much interested in an ID for these as I am in an explanation of their behavior. All these ants were of the same species and were holding onto each other in chains of 2 or 3. They weren't fighting in any obvious way. I've seen ants at war and the carnage that ensues, and these showed no injured individuals. They held onto each other while almost motionless. They were in the oak savanah of the Coast Range Southeast of Los Angeles.
