Eastern Lubber - Romalea microptera

Eastern Lubber - Romalea microptera
Spanish Fort, Baldwin County, Alabama, USA
July 27, 2012
An Eastern Lubber grasshopper (Romalea microptera) on the guide's hand on the swamp boat tour at 5 Rivers - Alabama's Delta Resource Center during Bug Swarm 2012. I don't usually think of grasshoppers as liking aquatic habitats, but these Lubbers were all over the cattails in the marshy area of the delta. Interestingly, all the ones I saw were the black melanistic phase, which is reported to be less common.
