Small spider - Walckenaeria cornuella - female

Small spider - Walckenaeria cornuella - Female
Cowichan Valley, British Columbia, Canada
September 13, 2012
Size: 2.2mm body length
Found this attractive spider under a piece of wood near our woodpile. Smallest I've yet photographed! She rarely stopped moving though, which made her a difficult subject.

I'm thinking Linyphiid, but I'm not sure what. I'll give her some moist wood to hang out on and keep her for a bit, so if necessary I can try getting a better epigynum shot. It's enlarged to about 150% as is though, and I'm approaching the limits of magnification I can get with my current setup.

From Rod Crawford
Very nice, it's Walckenaeria cornuella (Chamberlin & Ivie). In case he should find a male, they are very distinctive by the wee little carapace horn, smaller than in any other species. Oddly enough I wasn't able to find any online photo of the horn, but it's illustrated in the Millidge revision of the genus which can be downloaded from the Journal of Arachnology.

Moved from Spiders. A new species for the guide. Nice!

Great, thanks!

Uploaded a new epigynum photo, and a shot of the face I forgot I had.
