Insect on ripe fruit

Insect on ripe fruit
Scott County, Virginia, USA
September 15, 2012
Size: small
This isn't a very good photo, but I suspect it's something very common --- it shows up all over my garden whenever the best fruits get good and ripe. It makes (or finds?) a hole in the fruit and sucks up the sugary juices.

rather impressive photo of what seems to be a cantharid larva
