Unusual spider burrow - Schizocosa

Unusual spider burrow - Schizocosa
Russian Ridge OSP, San Mateo County, California, USA
September 14, 2012
I'm posting these in the order of discovery and I'll move it to spiders later.
Before sunset, I noticed these stones (each 2-3" in diameter) at the top of a short bank. The arrangement didn't seem natural; I didn't notice other stones in the immediate area. The trail had been worked on earlier in the summer.

Very interesting!
About all I can say is the spider is a Lycosid (wolf spider). Some of them build burrows, so I imagine the burrow was at least the spider's doing. Creative use of a wasp nest! Neat series, hope someone else will be able to shed more light on what's going on.
