Puss Caterpillar/larval form of the Pussy Moth - Megalopyge opercularis - Megalopyge opercularis

Puss Caterpillar/larval form of the Pussy Moth - Megalopyge opercularis - Megalopyge opercularis
Saint Stephens Church, King and Queen County, Virginia, USA
September 19, 2012
Size: 1.25"
This specimen looks cuddly and pet-able, but the hairs contain a venom that can cause painful welting, hives, and even nausea, headache, abdominal distress, rashes, blisters, and sometimes chest pain, numbness, or difficulty breathing (Eagleman 2008). I recommend not handling these directly if you happen to come across one no matter how cuddly cute it looks.
