Pelecinid Wasp
Would it be unusual to find this wasp in Prince Edward Island, Canada? We found it fascinating, and the locals had never seen one before. We just wondered if it blew in from somewhere...laughing...

PEI Pelecinus
I did a web search for the Pelecinus on Prince Edward Island, and my first hit was a YouTube video of "American Pelecinid filmed on the window of a rented cottage in Cavendish, PEI on Aug 27 2004." On a web site named Pest Control Canada, a fellow from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia posted a photo and said that his 67-year-old father had never seen a bug like this. The 1979 catalog of Hymenoptera reported the range as "Que. and Ont. south to Argentina," but in 2008 there was a paper published on the occurrence of the species in Manitoba. with a lengthy list of specimens collected in the province between 1976 and 2008, many by students at the University of Manitoba.

Thanks, that is really interesting, and was a fun part of our holiday out there to see a new insect we had never seen before. We are from Vancouver, BC and I have never seen that before!

yes, nothing else like it in North America
