Pearl Crescent - Phyciodes tharos - female

Pearl Crescent - Phyciodes tharos - Female
Greenville, Providence County, Rhode Island, USA
September 16, 2012
Size: Wingspan ~1.3"
This medium-small butterfly was feeding on Sedum blossoms and also basking. When basking, it was too far into my garden to get a clear photo due to other plants.
When feeding, it opened and closed its wings almost rhythmically, yet it was tough to get a clear photo of the open dorsal wings. This is the clearest of the dorsal view.
How is its gender determined? Also, I'm guessing it's a Pearl Crescent.

I agree, Marcia
looks like a Pearl Crescent to me too.

And there aren't many other possibilities in our area.
