Big Poplar sphinx moth? - Pachysphinx modesta

Big Poplar sphinx moth? - Pachysphinx modesta
Wichita, Kansas, USA
August 15, 2006
So far, the closest I've found to this moth is Pachysphinx modesta - Big Poplar sphinx moth. Is this correct? He (or she) had just recently emerged, I think, judging by the way he was fluttering and falling. He wouldn't show his hind wings for the camera, but I saw flashes of a rosy-colored pattern. He eventually was able to fly away. Thank you for your help.

Moved to guide...
And an outstanding image it is, too.

I would also guess
Pachysphinx modesta, based on the amount of black showing on the hindwing, and the butterfliesandmoths.org distribution map linked to on the Western Poplar Sphinx page, which shows no records of that species from Kansas.

There is confusion regarding the common name Big Poplar Sphinx (which has been used to refer to both P. modesta and P. occidentalis), so in an attempt to avoid confusion, the Guide suggests calling P. modesta the Modest Sphinx, and P. occidentalis the Western Poplar Sphinx [these names have also been used for some time by various sources].

Thank you
I appreciate all the information. Modest Sphinx it is. Thanks a lot for helping.
