Sawfly larvae? - Arge

Sawfly larvae? - Arge
Barrie, Simcoe, Ontario, Canada
August 15, 2006
We seem to be down to 6 of these on the little oak tree, but the ones that are left are growing like weeds. They've been on the same leaf for several days now - here's a current pic in hopes someone can ID them now that they're a bit bigger.

Argidae
Arge sp. The common one on oak is A. quidia, but can't be sure from the photo.

A recent post of an Elm Sawfly
had a link to forestry images where there is also posted images of a WIllow Oak Sawfly here. Since you have red and not willow oak, it is probably yet another species, but we're guessing it is in that same genus, Arge.

Suborder Symphyta - Sawflies
this is the larva of a sawfly. I don't know enough about them to be any more specific. Cheers,

Russ
