Sphinx moth chrysallis? -
Hemaris thysbe
Reed Turner Woodland, Lake County, Illinois, USA
August 15, 2006
Size: ~3cms
This was found on a bush that also had a sphinx moth caterpillar on it. Is this its chrysallis or cocoon?

In case any doubt remains, Charley is right. This is an Aleiodes mummy from which the adult has yet to eclose. Shed skins are not inflated.

A Hemaris pupa...
should look something like
this
. I believe this is a victim of a braconid mummy-wasp,

Oh, I see.
I saw your other comment but somehow missed the "old skin" part. Well, if you ever see something that looks exactly like this but is hard and has a round (exit) hole in it, that's what's going on! (Strange that a shed skin would be all puffed-out like that... Usually caterpillar skins are flat and insubstantial, but I haven't seen a
Hemaris
skin.)

After going back and looking closely, I know now this was a Hummingbird Clearwing - Hodges#7853 (Hemaris thysbe) old skin. Here he is after shedding:
