A fellow hiker picked up this moth (to my dismay) so I photographed it. She then put it back on the ground in this place. It is the same moth.

This moth is on its last leg, if not already dead. The wings are very worn. The right FW has even been severed on the edge of the board. I'm thinking that may well be its inside on the ground. The other moth, photographed just 4 minutes before this photo, is fresh, with sharp, clear markings. If this is the same moth, it certainly went downhill fast.

There were a couple moths there and she was (unfortunately) moving them to get photos until I said it would be better to leave them alone. I suppose it's possible that I saw her put down a different one. Could she have damaged it while handling it?

but believe me, as many insects as I've shot, I've even confused different species, when reviewing a couple 100 shots days later :( You may well have overlooked the shot you thinking about, in your images.

I went back to the photos I had shot and I believe you are correct; she had picked up a couple and this was a different one from the other photo.

Thanks - I've looked at Grammia species and am not able to decide. This seems a good suggestion.
