Unless this thing was found on or near a conifer, it is not a Diprion sp.

With its combination of prickles, pointed bud, and narrow stipules, the plant in the photo appears to be a raspberry (Rubus).

V J Hickey: almost directly under a 60ft Maine white pine; ID by U Maine Ext Serv Entomology...but there is also a 50 Black Walnut very close by, along with many Spruce trees. VJH
