Dendroleon obsoletus

Dendroleon obsoletus
Parkwood, Durham County, North Carolina, USA
August 15, 2006
Size: 25 mm
One from North Carolina. Posed. Length head to tip of abdomen was 25 mm, to wingtips, 33 mm. This antlion adult was flying around inside my kitchen at breakfast-time, quite the surprise. It must have come in at night as I was going in and out looking at moths on the porch. I captured it by hand, and chilled it, since I had to go to work. It did not do well, and perhaps was injured during capture. It expired during the photo session and I was able to pose it in a life-like posture. This was handy for doing some extreme close-ups.

Very nice. I had the wrong genus name before....I'm amazed that you type the latin names from memory. I am terrible with latin....I can barely remember the names, am always misspelling them, and won't even attempt to pronounce them. :(
