Dendroleon obsoletus Parkwood, Durham County, North Carolina, USA August 15, 2006 Size: 25 mm
Detail of one antenna, particularly pretty in this species, with a delicate pink color on the middle segments. This antenna is about 6 mm long in its natural slightly curled state, about 7 mm perhaps, stretched out. The length on my screen is about 130 mm, giving an on-screen magnification of about 22X. This will vary with monitor settings, but is the right ballpark.
The antennae of antlions seem to be quite distinctive among species--perhaps this would be helpful in keying genera. Anybody out there had experience keying this family?
