September 18, 2006
Size: Forewing length 37mm
ID provided by BOLD Systems; DNA for this specimen was and still is a 100% match with several specimens of species Catocala grotiana.

DNA for this specimen also is a 100% match with several specimens of Catocala semirelicta. This specimen is also a 100% to 99.85% match with several other Catocala species, as follows:

Top 99 matches in listing order:
At 100%: 12 Catocala grotiana, 1 Catocala amica, 31 Catocala semirelicta.
At 99.85%: 2 Catocala hermia francisca, 1 Catocala briseis, 1 Catocala hermia diantha, 1 Catocala faustina allusa, 2 Catocala semirelicta, 26 Catocala hermia, 20 Catocala californica, 2 Catocala faustina.

The public BIN page also includes several other species. Multiple species names, but most likely just 'one' species!

Current range maps show C. grotiana as not occurring in California. But C. semirelicta does; thus my move.
