Small red spider -
Allothrombium
Austin, Travis County, Texas, USA
October 8, 2012
Size: 7 mm long (estimated)
I'm assuming it's a spider; in any case it appears to have 8 legs. It seemed to be hunting across some lichens on tree bark.

velvet mite
I suddenly saw dozens of them last weekend on a walk on nearly every surface in the woods.
