Dark grasshopper near water - Tettigidea lateralis - female

Dark grasshopper near water - Tettigidea lateralis - Female
Madison, Madison County, Alabama, USA
October 16, 2012

I played with the picture a little to try and bring out
some of the shape on top, and I'm pretty sure she is T. lateralis. Since there aren't any from Alabama posted on BugGuide, I went ahead and posted the best of the three pictures to the guide pages. Since it is pretty fuzzy, it may get replaced eventually by a better picture.

Moved from Grasshoppers, Crickets, Katydids.

Thanks
Sure, I understand. Did the best I could given the size of the insect and the lighting conditions. I appreciate the effort you went to, a new one for my lifelist. I will be on the lookout for the species again and try to get better shots.

Sure see scads of grasshoppers lately. Not this one, but overall they are out in force.

probably a lot of the ones you're seeing are common ones,
but a lot are likely ones that haven't even been posted to BugGuide before (especially the short-winged species). Not too many grasshoppers in general have been posted from Alabama. Watch out, if you start looking closely, you might get "hooked"; they're pretty interesting. :0)

I'm pretty sure this is a female Tettigidea lateralis -
a species of Pygmy Grasshopper. However, it could be another species in the same genus. Do you have a shot of it from directly above? That would cinch the identification.

Sorry!
Sorry, those are pretty much the only shots that I have. Wasn't able to get another shot. Though not as jumpy as other grasshoppers it only stuck around for a while.
