Could this be Scaeva pyrastri? Any other info would be great.

Yes, Melangyna female
It is, and indeed it's looks a lot like Melangyna umbellatarum, which is widespread in Europe but also occurs in the Nearctic! So, it could very well be this species, but I don't know all the species in the Nearctic, so it is possible it is another one!

It is for sure not a Scaeva, I have to check again, but it looks like a Melangyna.

Thanks Martin for the info. It looks like a Melangyna umbellatarum but it was in google and the site was German I think, so I'm not sure if it is out west here.
