Mite with Mites

Mite with Mites
Basking Ridge, Somerset County, New Jersey, USA
October 20, 2012
I've found a bunch of those medium sized mites in my compost pile over the past summer, yesterday was the first time I ever bothered photographing them. They're about the size of those round red mites found on daddy long leg legs.

Found in this amazing Microhabitat:

Could you crop this closer to the bug?
This is an interesting shot, and it'd be nice if people could see more of the detail. Thanks!

probably Histiostomatidae
Hi Sean:

My guess is numerous deutonymphal histiostomatids (Acariformes: Astigmata: Histiostomatidae) hitching a ride on a uropodine mite (Parasitiformes: Mesostigmata: Uropodina). Hard to tell without closer views, though.

Cheers,
Heather
