I'm green with envy over your local grasshoppers. I have searched quite a bit for Schistocerca species, with no luck finding them. Love the photos - they're the only way I think I'll ever see these beautiful hoppers!

Hello Chad
Some of them are handsome little beasts. I thought Schistocerca was distributed nearly world-wide, where in the world are you?

I'm in Pennsylvania. Supposedly, several Schistocerca species grace our state, but I have yet to see a single one. But I search on. If only there were a reliable way to attract them to me...

Yes.
S. alutacea if I recall correctly. So they're back again! Look for swarms of these at lights at night. Let me know if you want company in the field, Bob. I don't have a car....Bugeric@webtv.net

Could it be S. albolineata?
On Hojun Song's website,
Schistocerca Information Site
, the picture looks very similar to the White-lined Bird Grasshopper
S. albolineata
. And Capinera, et.al
(
1
)
indicate on the range map that the White-lined Bird Grasshopper can be found in AZ. Obviously, since I've never even seen either of these critters, I have nothing but the photos to go on. Could it be the White-line Bird Grasshopper?

I'm pretty sure it's Albolineata, judging by its coloration.

Your guess is as good as/probably better than mine. As I said before, I've never even seen any of the
Schistocerca
species live, so I only have photos and field guides to draw my conclusions. I say we go with
albolineata
and make a new species page. Yeah - the White-lined Bird Grasshopper! - Yeah!
