Tiny Wasp - Psen erythropoda

Tiny Wasp - Psen erythropoda
Herndon, Fairfax County, Virginia, USA
April 20, 2006
Size: 5/8"
This tiny wasp stung my friend. No big deal, but we'd like to know what it is. We've found two in the house now, luckily months apart. This specimen has been dead for several months, but I've kept it around, hoping to ID it. I just found this site the other day and thought I'd give you guys a shot, since I haven't found it in any books yet.

Psen erythropoda, male (VA)
This is one of the few easily recognised Psenini: Psen erythropoda. To my knowledge it is the only eastern species with a red petiole and otherwise black gaster.

Psenini
these are a challenge to identify

Psenini tribe?
I am certain this is a sphecid wasp (family Sphecidae), and possibly in the tribe Psenini. Could also be something related in the subfamily Pemphredoninae. I have not been able to key out my specimens, and I have several. Might try again here shortly so I can give you a more straightforward answer:-)

It certainly does look like
some of the Psenini photos on this site. Thanks for the direction!
