Syrphid larva?
I'm thinking this is the larva of one of the aphid-eating syrphid flies.

Since found it to be Epistrop
Since found it to be Epistrophe emarginata.

?
When was this larva IDed and how?

Martin Hauser recognized it.
Martin Hauser recognized it.

Could it be a slug moth?
in the family Limacodidae?

I think it was probably about
I think it was probably about 3/8"-1/2"

Jim McClarin had something similar
at . Maybe he'll recognize it.
