Mantis - Stagmomantis carolina

Mantis - Stagmomantis carolina
St. Lucie County, Florida, USA
August 19, 2006

Stagmomantis!
That is Stagmomantis, for sure. It is a very anxious looking male nymph, doing its best to look like a twig, but just about ready to abandon camouflage and run for it.

Carolina Mantis
Hey Jeff,

You've been getting some great shots btw, I am on vaca down in Palm Beach Gardens shooting bugs just a little south of you...

This is most likely a young Stagmomantis carolina, a commonly found mantid in S. Florida. The only other species that looks close would be Stagmomantis floridensis but, from what I've read, one of the key features is the stigmatic (dark) patch on S. carolina's wings which can already be seen here on this young one.

Of course, I am an enthusiast and not a pro, so someone may correct me:)

Thanks
Yes, I noticed you were in town and meant to ask you about it.

I'm on the island in north Ft. Pierce, and Don (you may have seen some of his images as well) lives between Donald Ross and PGA east of 95, close to Frenchmans. Maybe we could plan something.

Next visit
That would be cool next visit as this one is coming to a close and we are heading back to Mass...

Sounds
good.
